School Website

Westview Middle School maintains a separate school web site [http://wms.stvrain.k12.co.us]. The school's web site makes it easier to communicate news and information to parents. Please visit the web site for more detailed information and events concerning Westview Middle School.

In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Westview Middle School is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.

2008 Bond Projects

Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.

History

As you walk into the spacious entrance of Westview, it becomes obvious why this building, opened in 1991, was named “Westview.” The building has received numerous architectural awards for its reflection of the mountain backdrop.

School Focus

Rated as a high performing school, the Westview staff strives to uphold high expectations for student achievement. All core and elective teachers work toward the common goals of increased performance in the areas of math, reading, and writing, while maintaining the desire for students to experience a variety of interests. Specific school goals include increasing the percentage of students scoring at the proficient or advanced levels on the math portion of the CSAP to 63%, on the reading portion to 85%, and on the writing portion to 75% by the time students exit the 8th grade.

In addition to these school wide goals, each teaching team analyzes the CSAP data from their own students and chooses a specific standard within each of three goal areas to focus on throughout the year. All of the teachers on that team incorporate that standard focus into their own content in order to increase student understanding and achievement of the skills and knowledge required for that standard.

Achieving Academic Success

Using a standards-based philosophy that incorporates performance based data, students are able to demonstrate achievement in a variety of ways. In addition, there are instructional strategies and programs in place to support student learning:

  • A Third Elective period each quarter. Students needing additional help in Math or English take Academic Labs while students needing enrichment take a variety of Challenge classes. Other students explore interest areas in classes that are topical in nature, but based upon core academic standards.
  • A strong Instructional Media Center (IMC) that provides resources for student learning in all content areas as well as computer stations with multimedia software available for student use.
  • Extra time built into the core schedule to allow team flexibility to meet the needs of students requiring support, or time to make up work, or additional teaching time.
  • Flexible core content scheduling to allow teams to block for instruction or take additional time for interdisciplinary work.
  • Three computer labs located strategically throughout the building for instructional purposes.

What Makes Westview Unique

The foundation of the school is built upon the concept of “looping” called Student Teacher Progression (STP) in which the students stay with the same team of teachers all three years of middle school.

An advisor/advisee program that enhances academic, social, and emotional development.

Westview’s Wildside—Where Nature Comes Alive! To the west of the school, a nationally protected wetlands area for handson scientific study.

A stong volunteer partnership with the Longmont Rotary Club. Members support students with their reading and math efforts.

Before/After School Activities

Students have a wide range of activities to participate in that include Art Club, Drama Club, Excalibur, Geography Bee, Math Counts, MESA, National Junior Honor Society, Spelling Bee, SOS, Student Council, Teens for Christ, The Climbing Club, and Spanish Club. Each year, eighth graders also have an opportunity for a weekend backpacking trip and a trip to Washington D. C.

Competitive opportunities are available for students who choose to become involved in the After School Intramural Sports Program that include volleyball, basketball, wrestling and track.

Feeder Pattern

Students leaving Westview Middle School will attend either Longmont High School or Silver Creek High School. A large portion of Westview Middle School students previously attended either Central Elementary School, Hygiene Elementary School, or Longmont Estates Elementary School.
