Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.

History

Built in 1963, with an addition in 1965, Spangler is named for D. W. Spangler, an influential and highly respected educator who taught at Longmont High School for 43 years. Spangler is located adjacent to Spangler Park and offers a variety of learning experiences for students.

School Focus

The faculty at Spangler is committed to addressing the needs of a diverse community of learners and have begun efforts to address challenges and achievement levels for all students. Spangler School’s goals in reading and mathematics are aligned with Colorado’s target goals for No Child Left Behind. Specifically, the school’s goals are to:

  • Raise achievement in Reading in grades 3-5 from 70.59% meeting or exceeding standard to 82.69% meeting or exceeding standard as measured by the Reading CSAP assessment with a minimum of 95% participation for all subgroups.
  • Raise achievement in Mathematics in grade 5 from 63.83% meeting or exceeding standard to 81.9% meeting or exceeding as measured by the Mathematics CSAP assessment with a minimum of 95% participation for all subgroups.

To meet these goals, the school schedule has been redesigned so that there are more instructional minutes for literacy and numeracy. Additionally, teachers work in grade level teams that meet weekly to look at student achievement data. Teachers utilize this data to help guide their planning and instructional delivery in reading and writing. As a result of the faculty’s efforts, student achievement has improved, and the school received positive feedback from an outside evaluator based on the Colorado Department of Education school improvement standards.

Achieving Academic Success

At Spangler, a clear focus has been established. Students know their job is to work hard and to learn and that the teacher’s role is to teach so students are successful. Programs that are currently in place include:

  • Community partnerships that are being promoted to help provide students with support. United Methodist Church, Kid’s Hope, LifeBridge Church, Longs Peak Church, Wells Fargo Bank, NOAA, and Costco are some of the organizations that are involved at Spangler to ensure student success.
