School Website
Sunset Middle School maintains a separate school web site [http://sms.stvrain.k12.co.us]. The school's web site makes it easier to communicate news and information to parents. Please visit the web site for more detailed information and events concerning Sunset Middle School.
In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Sunset Middle School is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.
2008 Bond Projects
Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
History
Originally opened in 1975 as Longmont Junior High School, the name change and the move to a middle school philosophy occurred in 1991. Sunset is located adjacent to Affolter Park in the middle of a high tech industrial park area and serves the south central portion (including Niwot and Southmoor Park) of Longmont.
School Focus
A high performing school striving to achieve excellence, Sunset holds high standards and expectations for all students resulting in three academic school goals that mirror the district goal: “By 2008-2009, the number of students scoring in the proficient range will be 93% in reading, 92% in writing, and 89% in math.”
All teachers, regardless of their content area, use standards across all curriculums. This enables us to engage students through their interests and strengths. We offer accelerated classes in all core areas (math, science, social studies and language arts).
Achieving Academic Success
Sunset believes that each and every student is capable of reaching high levels of performance. To achieve academic success for all students, several instructional strategies, tools, and programs are in place including:
- An outstanding accelerated program where students must meet expected criteria focusing in the core subject areas of science, math, language arts, and social studies.
- Integrated study opportunities during elective time to help students with literacy, study skills and organization.
- Extra time and support built into schedules for those students who have been identified as struggling to ensure their success.
- An excellent electives program that includes courses in performing arts, fine arts, technology, Spanish, physical education, and health education.
- A MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) program for all students but especially targeted for female and at-risk students.
What Makes Sunset Unique
A building where all things are possible and and the expectation of working to excellence is the given for all students.
Teams of teachers work together with elective teachers to integrate standards and learning experiences across content areas. Our goal is to deliver instruction that is all encompassing and engaging and inspires students to achieve their personal goals through middle school and beyond.
All students are encouraged to participate in, or at least experiment with, one of our music programs. Our school’s music program includes over 85% of the student body who are actively involved in band, jazz band, orchestra, and/or choir.
When music is not a student’s interest, teachers, administrators, and counselors work with the individual to help them find a way to get involved in the school community.
Over 150 parents who play an active role in promoting a positive learning environment and school climate through volunteering in classrooms, in the office, or by becoming a mentor/tutor for an at-risk student.
Before/After School Activities
Students have a wide range of activities/clubs to participate in including Geography Bee, School Drama Club, Jazz Band, Yearbook, Newspaper, Technology Club, and National Junior Honor Society, as well as math competitions.
Sport opportunities are available for students who choose to become involved in the After School Intramural Sports Programs that include volleyball, basketball, wrestling and track. Although not sanctioned, cross country and flag football are also offered for students.
Feeder Pattern
Students leaving Sunset Middle School will attend Niwot High School. A large portion of Sunset Middle School students previously attended either Burlington Elementary School, Indian Peaks Elementary School, or Niwot Elementary School.
