School Website

Olde Columbine High School maintains a separate school web site [http://ochs.stvrain.k12.co.us]. The school's web site makes it easier to communicate news and information to parents. Please visit the web site for more detailed information and events concerning Olde Columbine High School.

In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Olde Columbine High School is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.

History

Finding ways for students to achieve their full potential is the primary focus of Olde Columbine (OCHS), a non-traditional high school in the St. Vrain Valley School District. The school was originally opened in the 1980’s and housed at the Main Street School building. Since it originally opened, it has been moved twice and has been in its present location since 1990.

School Focus

A 2004 Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award School, Olde Columbine offers a high school completion program with the same requirements and the same diploma as the other district high schools. Several unique components set Olde Columbine apart from a “traditional” high school.

  • Students must go through a screening process before being admitted to the program.
  • Once accepted, all students must attend a required weekly meeting that is a forum for disseminating information, putting on student presentations, and celebrating individual successes.
  • A unique scheduling component that allows students to build their own schedules provided they attend a required 24 hours a week.
  • An emphasis on the importance of diversity.

Emphasizing reading, writing, and mathematics, Olde Columbine’s primary focus is to continue to improve test scores. Olde Columbine is dedicated to addressing the individual needs of students through ongoing teacher/student interaction, small class sizes, and flexible scheduling.

Achieving Academic Success

Olde Columbine believes that every student should reach his or her personal best. To achieve academic success for all students, several instructional strategies, tools, and programs are in place including:

  • Small class sizes that allow teachers to differentiate instruction and provide students with one-on-one instruction.
  • Self-paced work that allows students to progress at their own rate.
  • Labs for students to receive individualized instruction as needed in the core areas.
  • Staff meetings daily to discuss students’ needs and issues.
  • Advisor meeting weekly with each student to monitor their academic and social progress along with their attendance.

What Makes Olde Columbine High Unique

An exemplary school where students can generate their own success and build a bright future for themselves in a safe and nurturing environment.

Every student is responsible for his/her own education that includes regular attendance, consistent progress toward academic goals, and respectful behavior toward self and others (see Norms).

Most of the students who attend Olde Columbine also hold part-time jobs. Flexible scheduling allows students to determine what works best for them, not what is most convenient for the school.

Before/After School Activities

Olde Columbine High School students are eligible to participate in athletics at their district home high school if they maintain the eligibility requirements determined by the Colorado Athletic High School Association (CHSAA).
