2008 Bond Projects

Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.

History

Steeped in history and surrounded by the beauty of the foothills, Lyons was first established as a rock quarry community. Lyons Elementary opened its doors in 1890 and remains an essential part of this close-knit community.

School Focus

As a school, we are continuously focused on supporting all students with achieving to their highest potential and developing 21st century competencies in creative and critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and improving learning outcomes.

The staff meets in professional learning communities (PLCs) to set student achievement goals, monitor student learning, and inform instructional decision-making to support the success of all students. Professional development is ongoing and embedded through our Late Start learning days, grade level meetings, and vertical teams. Additional enrichment opportunities are also provided to staff by attending conferences and trainings offered within and outside the district. Staff at Lyons Elementary is highly committed to the success of every student and we pride ourselves on differentiating instructional approaches to best meet the needs of all learners.

Achieving Academic Success

  • A small school that provides connectivity and communication between students, parents, the community and staff. Teachers are trained in the area of differentiation to address the academic needs of all students.
  • Integration of technology in the classroom and media lab equips students with 21st century skills and heightens levels of engagement.
  • Small group guided reading instruction for students in all grades. Students in grades K-3, who aren’t reading at grade level, receive additional support through our literacy teacher.
  • Writer’s Workshop is the instructional model used for teaching writing.
  • Science Note-booking is used to support the Foss Science Curriculum, integrating writing, inquiry-based approaches, and opportunities for students to be young scientist.
  • A Challenge program provides additional enrichment for accelerated learners in reading, writing, math, and poetry to meet the needs of higher performing students.
  • Positive Behavior Support is promoted throughout the school. Students are expected to demonstrate respect, responsibility and safety at all times. Trained Peace Pals, a daily Peace Place (which emphasizes a character trait for the month), Positive Office phone calls from the principal, and weekly visits by the school counselor are some of the ways students develop social/emotional skills to support positive and productive interactions with others.

What Makes Lyons Unique

As a school committed to promoting volunteerism, our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) plays an active role in supporting our students, staff and community. This group is dedicated to providing fundraising for materials and supplies for teachers and students, and providing other opportunities to enrich the educational programming and environment at Lyons Elementary. Some of the special events that are planned by the PTO include, Astronomy Night, Make a Difference Day, Discovery Fair, Jog-a-thon, Carnival, and much, much more. There are multiple opportunities for parent and community involvement within the school, as we recognize the importance of parent and community partnerships at Lyons Elementary.

Full-day, fee-based kindergarten and half-day morning kindergarten are also offered. A preschool program is available for 3-5 year olds that meet for a half-day 2 or 3 times a week.
