History
Steeped in history and surrounded by the beauty of the foothills, Lyons was first established as a rock quarry community. Lyons Elementary opened its doors in 1890 and is an essential part of this close-knit community.
School Focus
Students receive instruction in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies throughout the school year. Lyons Elementary has focused on strong paragraph development, on topic retells and summaries, and constructing meaning through inquiry for both math and science.
Our staff meets weekly in professional learning communities (PLCs) to discuss data collected from student work and then make instructional decisions to assist students to achieve their highest potential. Monthly meetings are held to collaborate in vertical teams to make sure that grade level instructional practices are aligned with state standards.
Achieving Academic Success
Honored with the Superintendent’s Award for excellent achievement in Math and Science in Novembr of 2006, Lyons offers students a wide variety of opportunities that include:
- A small school that provides connectivity and communication between students and staff. Teachers are trained in the area of differentiation to address the academic needs of all students.
- A block schedule that supports literacy and numeracy classes in the morning for all students, with specials and student pullouts in the afternoon.
- Small group instruction for reading that includes Early Start in kindergarten, Right Start in Grades 1-3, and SOAR in grades 3-5. Students who are not on grade level receive extra support through our literacy teacher.
- Six-Traits Writing used as an instructional guide with the Lucy Calkins and Ralph Fletcher writing models used for Writer’s Workshop.
- Ability clustering in math to challenge students to strive to reach their full potential.
- A Challenge program provides a variety of activities in reading, writing, math, and poetry to meet the needs of higher performing students.
What Makes Lyons Unique
We are a science-oriented campus that features an Astronomy Night, a special Science Day, and a Discovery Fair. Students use inquiry in conjunction with the scientific process throughout their investigations.
Over 100 volunteers provide support for students in the classrooms, along with an active Parent Teacher Organization whose mission is to provide opportunities that include every child and parent at the school.
Two half-day morning, everyday kindergarten programs with an extended feebased kindergarten in the afternoon on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. A preschool program is available for 3-5 year olds that meets for a half day 2 or 3 times a week.
