2008 Bond Projects
Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
History
Rich in tradition and steeped in history, Longs Peak was originally opened in 1969 as a junior high. Today, Longs Peak students enjoy a newly remodeled campus with a wonderful view of the majestic Rocky Mountains. The school boasts the only Veteran’s memorial mural in a Colorado public school and celebrates Veteran’s Day every year with a breakfast for veterans served by students and staff.
School Focus
Longs Peak focuses on high academic and behavioral standards for all students. All grade level teachers use common reading, writing, and math rubrics as well as common assessments. Throughout the year, enrichment and remediation classes are implemented, and the staff continues to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. As a result, reading, writing, and math scores continue to increase as shown by CSAP test scores and the STAR reading comprehension assessment.
Achieving Academic Success
Achieving academic success for all students Achieving academic success for all students is a top priority at Longs Peak with several instructional strategies, tools, and programs in place including:
- Honors courses that are offered at all grade levels in core subjects to challenge our gifted and talented students and high academic achievers.
- An outstanding electives program that includes Concert, Symphonic and Jazz Bands; Men’s and Women’s Choir; Orchestra; Spanish and Honors Spanish; Fine Arts; Honors Art; Technology; and Physical Education.
- Literacy coaches who help other teachers develop, learn, and implement new techniques. Additionally, students on Individual Literacy Plans are scheduled into literacy classes providing even more support with reading skills.
- TS-Nexus Math Computer Software program that assesses student ability and targets the mathematical strengths and needs for middle school students.
- STAR reading computerized assessment that measures student reading ability.
- Accelerated Reader program that measures student reading comprehension of books.
What Makes Longs Peak Unique
WEB: Welcome Everybody Belongs!! Eighth grade students, trained as mentors, buddy up with sixth graders during the first week of school and continue working with the students throughout the rest of the school year.
Two-person instructional teams at the 6th grade level allow the teachers to get to know students, their needs, and help ease the transition from elementary to middle school.
Positive Behavior System that routinely acknowledges the positive behaviors of all students.
Parent Teacher Conferences are student led with students sharing their individual work and portfolios. Over ninety percent of Longs Peak parents attend these conferences throughout the year.
Before/After School Activities
A wide range of activities/clubs are available after school including Brain Bowl, Art Club, Chess Club, Geography Club, History Club, Student Council, Yearbook, Computer Club, Spanish Club, Technology Club, Soccer and Lacrosse.
Competitive opportunities are available for students who choose to become involved in the After School Intramural Sports Program that include volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and track.
In partnership with the City of Longmont, Longs Peak runs an after school program (open daily until 5:30 p.m.) that provides a safe place for students to participate in fun activities.
Feeder Pattern
Students leaving Longs Peak Middle School will attend Longmont High School. A large portion of Longs Peak Middle School students previously attended either Mountain View Elementary School, Northridge Elementary School, or Sanborn Elementary School.
