History
Rich in tradition and steeped in history, Longs Peak was originally opened in 1969 as a junior high. Today, Longs Peak students enjoy a newly remodeled campus with a wonderful view of the majestic Rocky Mountains. In the fall of 2009, after approval by the St. Vrain Valley Schools’ Board of Education, Longs Peak Middle School opened as an officially recognized Pre-Advanced Placement focus school based on the College Board’s middle school SpringBoard curriculum.
School Focus
Longs Peak’s mission is college preparedness for all students. This journey begins in 6th grade and continues in 7th and 8th. In fact, research by ACT demonstrates that eighth grade academic achievement is the single greatest predictor of college and career readiness in students. On average, college graduates earn $1 million more over the course of a lifetime than individuals who do not have a four year degree from a college or university. At Longs Peak, we believe a college degree will allow our students to access the American dream in the 21st century workplace, one marked by rapid globalization and ever increasing competition for high paying careers. Financial aid, work study, scholarships, and student loans can make a dream of a college education a reality for any Longs Peak student willing to work hard and earn good grades at Longs Peak and in high school.
Achieving Academic Success
Longs Peak students in grades 6-8 experience SpringBoard, an academically rigorous and sequential English curriculum created by a group of university professors, secondary teachers, and curriculum experts for the College Board.2 The SpringBoard curriculum engages middle school students by balancing the study of contemporary literature and media with classical and traditional literature. As students acquire essential knowledge and skills, they are engaged in critical thinking and self-reflection. SpringBoard requires the reading of a wide range of literature and an intensive writing curriculum.
Because the need for college preparedness is so great, all Longs Peak students are engaged in the SpringBoard curriculum in their regularly paced or honors English courses; traditionally, honors programs have been designed to meet the needs of only a small and select group of students. In the fall of 2010, Longs Peak will adopt the SpringBoard math curriculum in all math classes in grades 6-8.
What Makes Longs Peak Unique
In addition to the pre-Advanced Placement SpringBoard curriculum, Longs Peak offers honors coursework in all core classes, art, jazz band, choir, orchestra, Spanish, and drama. All 6th grade students participate in band, orchestra, and choir. Longs Peak has St. Vrain’s only middle school lacrosse program as well as a host of after school sports and academic clubs. Most importantly, Longs Peak Middle School has a talented staff of educators who build lasting relationships with students and families!
Before/After School Activities
A wide range of activities/clubs are available after school including Brain Bowl, Art Club, Chess Club, Geography Club, History Club, Student Council, Yearbook, Computer Club, Spanish Club, Technology Club, Soccer and Lacrosse.
Competitive opportunities are available for students who choose to become involved in the After School Intramural Sports Program that include volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and track.
In partnership with the City of Longmont, Longs Peak runs an after school program (open daily until 5:30 p.m.) that provides a safe place for students to participate in fun activities.
Feeder Pattern
Students leaving Longs Peak Middle School will attend Longmont High School. A large portion of Longs Peak Middle School students previously attended either Mountain View Elementary School, Northridge Elementary School, or Sanborn Elementary School.
