School Website

Legacy Elementary School maintains a separate school web site [http://legacyes.stvrain.k12.co.us]. The school's web site makes it easier to communicate news and information to parents. Please visit the web site for more detailed information and events concerning Legacy Elementary School.

In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Legacy Elementary School is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.

2008 Bond Projects

Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.

History

Opened in the fall of 2004, Legacy honors the farmers who farmed the land where the school is located and the miners who worked the mines in the area.

School Focus

The main focus for the staff and students at Legacy centers around the core areas of reading and writing.

To work towards meeting these goals, the staff has established a Professional Learning Community in which all members work toward student success through collaboration and shared goals. The staff meets regularly to discuss what is being done in the classrooms to reach academic achievement, to develop common assessments, to align curriculum, and to create support structures for individual student success.

Achieving Academic Success

In an effort to achieve academic success for all students, Legacy offers a wide variety of opportunities that include:

  • Strong literacy support for students who are struggling with reading in kindergarten through third grade.
  • Small group literacy support for fifth graders provided by specials (music, art, and physical education) teachers.
  • Reading enrichment for high performing students in grades 3-5.
  • A balanced math approach that helps students understand what happens in math functions as well as fact families.
  • Programs to address students’ social, emotional, and academic needs (such as Leave a Legacy, praise notes, and a no bully program).
  • Legacy Lion Luncheon is an opportunity for students who have been selected by their peers to be treated to a special luncheon with the principal. Selection criteria is based on qualities defined in Leave a Legacy.

What Makes Legacy Unique

A key value at Legacy is responsiveness to the needs of the learner. To that end, Legacy focuses on multiple assessment strategies as well as communicating frequently with parents in order to better meet children’s learning needs.

An integrated gifted program allows students to meet before school for enrichment activities, receive more rigorous work in class, and/or complete independent study projects under the guidance of a licensed teacher.

The teachers and PTO have organized an outdoor classroom space, the Legacy Outback, that will be used to enhance science instruction.

Students participate on Odyssey of the Mind teams as they prepare for regional, state, and world competition.

Parent volunteers facilitate multiple Junior Great Books groups where children receive additional small group reading time.

Kindergarten students either attend 2 1/2 days per week, or parents have the option of choosing an all-day fee-based kindergarten program with a certificated instructor.

For children between the ages of 3 and 5, Legacy offers a fee-based preschool program.

Before/After School Activities

Lion’s Den: a before (7:00-9:05 a.m.) and after (3:40-6:00 p.m.) school child care program for students in kindergarten through fifth grades.

A variety of activities are provided both before and after school through Community School and encompass programs that include physical skills, art, music, literacy, math, and science.

A Show Choir for grades 3-5 that represents Legacy at local events and other schools.
