History
Adjacent to Affolter Park in south Longmont, Indian Peaks was established in 1977. Walking into the main entrance of the school, visitors are greeted by a hand painted map of the United States and a view of the peaks for which the school was named.
School Focus
Improving achievement in literacy for all students across content areas, using student data to improve teaching and learning, and collegiality and shared decision-making among the Indian Peaks community are areas of pride. Specific school goals are:
- Students in grade 5 will improve so that 10% of students will move out of the unsatisfactory category on the Math CSAP assessment and the advanced category will increase 1% over 3 years.
- Students in grades 3-5 will improve so that 85% of the students will be reading at or above grade level as measured by the CSAP assessment.
- Students reading in grades 1-2 will improve so that 85% of the students will be reading at or above grade level as measured by an Individual Reading Assessment.
To work towards meeting these goals, teachers are committed to action research and implementing current best practices to increase student achievement. Collaboration, in addition to common planning time, is incorporated in the daily teacher schedule.
Achieving Academic Success
The staff of Indian Peaks creates learning experiences to help each child be successful. To that end, achieving academic success for students includes:
- Colorado Department of Education Gain-Maker School
- Superintendent’s Award for excellence in student achievement.
- Focused literacy instructionfor 30-40 minutes daily for those students who require extra support
- Bilingual classroom instruction for students whose primary language is Spanish
- Equations, a math strategy game that challenges 4th and 5th grade students to advanced levels of math
- Enrichment and gifted and talented opportunties, for identified students in grades 3-5
- Right Start an early intervention reading program
