School Website

Flagstaff Academy maintains a separate school web site [http://www.flagstaffacademy.com]. The school's web site makes it easier to communicate news and information to parents. Please visit the web site for more detailed information and events concerning Flagstaff Academy.

In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Flagstaff Academy is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.

History

Located in a South Longmont technology business park, Flagstaff Academy was one of two new charter schools, authorized by the St. Vrain Valley School District, to open their doors to students in the fall of 2005. As a “Free Public School of Choice,” there is no tuition. However, space is limited and a child’s acceptance is determined through a lottery process.

School Focus

Flagstaff Academy focuses on the Core Knowledge curriculum based on E. D. Hirsch’s work. Core Knowledge defines the knowledge and skills students master at each grade level and gives students the foundation they need for success in school. Core Knowledge is:

  • Solid curriculum that includes the basic principles of constitutional government, important events of world history, essential elements of mathematics and of oral and written expression, art and music, and stories and poems passed down from generation to generation.
  • Sequenced curriculum that clearly defines the knowledge and skills required to participate in each successive grade.
  • Specific curriculum that answers the question, “What do our children need to know?”
  • Shared knowledge that provides all children, regardless of background, with the shared knowledge they need to be included in our national literate culture.

Achieving Academic Success

Achieving academic success for students at Flagstaff is a partnership between teachers, parents, and students. Specific programs, tools, and strategies in place to achieve academic success for students include:

  • Instructional methods that include focusing on the individual learner; subject grouping according to subject mastery, progressive levels of difficulty, and ongoing assessment for advancement.
  • A science lab-based program with integration of math, science, technology, and writing.
  • A specials program that includes art, music, physical education, character education, and Spanish as a foreign language.
  • Special Education, ESL and Gifted/Talented offerings to meet the academic challenges of all students.
  • After school tutoring, study skill classes, and mentoring programs provide students with the extra support needed for success.
