In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Erie Middle School is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.
2008 Bond Projects
Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
History
Nestled in a quiet valley adjacent to Coal Creek, Erie has long been known as a town “off the beaten path.” Located between two major state highways, the Erie community is rapidly growing as is the school population. In the 2005-2006 school year, Erie Middle School opened in the original 1926 school building as a “middle school.”
School Focus
While the original school goals were designed for both the middle and senior high school, as a “new middle school” the school’s goals remain the same and center around raising student performance levels in reading, writing, and mathematics.
To meet the school goals, instructional decisions are made through a Professional Learning Community in which the staff works toward student success through collaboration and shared goals. Aligning the curriculum is the focus of the monthly late start days and weekly team meetings. Both vertical and horizontal articulation is taking place within the school as well as between the elementary and high schools.
Achieving Academic Success
Achieving academic success for all students is a top priority for Erie. Several instructional strategies, tools, and programs are in place including:
- SOAR, small group intensive reading curriculum for students reading below grade level.
- SRI testing is completed a minimum of three times a year to assess a student’s reading ability and to ensure that progress has been achieved.
- Literacy Lab and Math Lab classes that provide additional support for students in math and/or literacy.
- Special activities at each grade level: 6th Grade Rocky Mountain National Park, 7th Grade Outdoor Education, 8th Grade Florida Trip
- Five person teams teach core subjects in blocks of time providing maximum support and intervention for students at different levels of need.
- Additional time in literacy and numeracy.
What Makes Erie Unique
Three fully equipped computer labs plus a mobile lab provide opportunities for students to become innovative and effective in educational content.
Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)/Advisory period meets daily for the entire building.
The School Accountability Committee (SAC) provides a great opportunity for parents and students to become involved in setting school goals and programs.
The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) promotes a positive school climate and good communication between the school and community, raises funds for activities, and provides volunteers for school events. Over 150 parents play an active role in promoting a positive school climate.
Before/After School Activities
Students are encouraged to become involved in a variety of co-curricular activities that include Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Chess Club, Soccer Club, Odyssey of the Mind, Optimist Brain Bowl, Math Olympiads, MESA, Student Council, Newspaper, Yearbook, and National Junior Honor Society.
Competitive opportunities are available for students who choose to become involved in the After School Intramural Sports Program that include cross country, volleyball, basketball, wrestling and track.
Feeder Pattern
Students leaving Erie Middle School will attend Erie High School. A large portion of Erie Middle School students previously attended Black Rock Elementary School, Erie Elementary School, or Legacy Elementary School.
