In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Central Elementary School is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.
2008 Bond Projects
Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
History
Nestled in Longmont’s historic Thompson Park neighborhood, Central has a long and rich history of educating students in Longmont. The building, built in 1878, was the first school in Longmont and was designated as a Longmont Historic Landmark on September 14, 1976. The school is within walking distance of parks, recreation, and art centers.
School Focus
The main focus for the staff and students at Central centers around student writing and reading. Specifically,
- Students’ writing will improve so that 80% of the students who take the writing portion of the CSAP assessment will be deemed to be proficient or advanced.
- Students’ reading in grades 1-5 will improve so that 85% of the students will be judged to be at grade level.
- Students’ reading will improve so that 80% of those students who take the reading portion of the CSAP assessment will be deemed to be proficient or advanced.
To meet these goals, the staff meets together during monthly inservice days and PLC days to look at student work and evaluate instructional practices. Lessons in the classroom are planned based on standards and expected learning outcomes.
Achieving Academic Success
Central is proud to have a learning environment centered around a diverse student population, involved parents, wonderful volunteers, and a staff that is passionate about instruction and learning. Central provides students and parents with a strong and well-rounded set of experiences that include an emphasis on literacy, numeracy, and technology. Specific strategies, programs, and tools include:
- We are excited to announce that in early June, after submitting Application A to IB Americas, we were officially granted candidate status! This is an exciting step in our journey to become an IB World School! Central is now in Candidate Phase I (next year being Candidate Phase II).
- Literacy groups for all students below grade level or on literacy plans.
- A bilingual program for students whose first language is Spanish. Literacy and numeracy instruction is in their native language through third grade.
- Six-Traits and Writer’s Workshop are used for writing instruction.
- Gifted and Talented programs in literacy and math.
- Great Books taught by parent volunteers for first and second grade students.
- Hawk's Club, a before and after school child care program.
- Preschool program.
- Full day and half day options for kindergarten.
