Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
History
Burlington Elementary, built in 1967, is situated in the southern portion of the City of Longmont adjacent to Kanemoto Park.
School Focus
A continual focus at Burlington centers around improving student writing. Additionally, Burlington also focuses on improving math achievement in the area of linking concepts and procedures as students develop and use computational techniques. Specifically,
- At the primary grade level, students use the Six-Traits writing rubric to analyze their writing; at the intermediate level, students use the extended response rubric provided by the Colorado Department of Education.
- Students use both mental arithmetic and pencil/paper problem solving techniques as well as communicating the reasoning used in solving problems.
To work towards meeting these goals, staff development is embedded throughout each day and the school year. The Burlington staff has all been trained in the Six-Traits curriculum. Teachers in kindergarten through second grades have been trained in Primary Units of Writing. Teachers in third through fifth grades will conduct a study team to instruct Intermediate Units of Writing. The staff meets monthly in an ongoing evaluation of student pieces.
Each grade level team has identified math skills to be mastered by students at the end of the school year and has established common assessments. Second through fifth grade students are assessed using Edu-Soft assessments three times a year.
Achieving Academic Success
Achieving academic success for all students at Burlington is a community effort that includes the staff and dedicated parent volunteers. Specific programs in place include:
- Reading instruction focused on small, flexible group instruction.
- Additional time provided within the school day for those students who have not mastered problem-solving grade level skills and have not acquired fluency in their math facts.
- Homework Club provided three afternoons a week for students who need extra help in the core areas of reading, writing, and math.
- Gifted and talented instruction for identified students in the intermediate grades as well as enrichment classes for first and second graders. High ability clusters of math and language arts students placed in differentiated classrooms in the first through fifth grades.
