In addition to the separate school web site, an overview of Altona Middle School is provided [below]. A similar summary is provided for each school within the District to make it easier to find the same information for each of the District's schools.

2008 Bond Projects

Thanks to the community, the passage of the 2008 Bond will provide funds for building repairs and infrastructure upgrades.

History

Altona moved to its present location in January of 2006 and is the newest middle school building in the district. Located in the southwest corner of Longmont, a rapidly growing area, Altona is located in close proximity to Eagle Crest Elementary, Blue Mountain Elementary and Silver Creek High schools.

School Focus

With a motto that states “Don’t Tread on Me,” Altona’s focus is on academics. For three consecutive years (2006 – 2008) the school was recognized for academic achievement by the State with the John Irwin School of Excellence award.

Specifically, students will achieve academic excellence in reading, writing, and mathematics. Altona prioritizes its academic program as follows:

  • Math and Language Arts
  • Science and Social Studies
  • Enrichment Classes
  • Extracurricular Activities

To work towards meeting this goal, sixty-five percent of the school day is devoted to core instruction with mini teams of math and English teachers. Curriculum and instruction are guided by specific, clearly stated, challenging goals and standards at each grade level and grades reflect what a “student knows and is able to do,” measured against the standards.

Achieving Academic Success

Achieving academic success for all students is a top priority at Altona. Several instructional strategies, tools, and programs are in place to serve the wide spectrum of student learning including:

  • English and math instruction with daily attendance in these critical areas.
  • Social studies and science instruction for students on an every other day basis.
  • Advanced English and math classes designed to prepare students for honors and advanced placement course work in high school.
  • Preparatory classes offered for the struggling learner.
  • Additional reading, writing, and math instruction during the day for those students below grade level in lieu of enrichment opportunities.

What Makes Altona Unique

The latest in technology-based education. Three fully equipped computer labs plus four computers in every classroom provide students with new opportunities to access innovative and effective educational content.

Embracing technology, ninety-seven percent of families at Altona Middle School receive the school’s weekly updates via the World Wide Web. Classrooms use smart carts and clicker technology for interactive teaching/learning. Students participate in the library Blog, and parents interact with the principal via his Blog as well.

Altona fosters a spirit of being part of a bigger world and giving back to the community. Projects include supporting a canned food drive, a toy drive, and soldier and disaster relief funds.

Before/After School Activities

Students have a wide range of after school activities/clubs from which to choose. Please check with the school for a list of current offerings.

Competitive opportunities are available for students who choose to become involved in the After School Intramural Sports Program that includes volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and track. Although not sanctioned, cross country and Bolder Boulder are also offered for the students.

Feeder Pattern

Students leaving Altona Middle School will attend Silver Creek High School. A large portion of Altona Middle School students previously attended either Blue Mountain Elementary School or Eagle Crest Elementary School.
