The Bilingual Education program, English as a Second Language (ESL) program, and the Newcomer program encompass a continuum of services provided for English Language Learners in supporting the acquisition of English as a Second Language (ESL) for students identified as English Language Learners (ELL). The department works collaboratively with the Colorado Department of Education and the St. Vrain Valley School District Assessment Office to monitor student progress with the annual CELA (Colorado English Language Assessment) assessment. Data analysis of CELA and other assessment tools, program evaluation, parent involvement, and professional development are all focuses of the department.

The English Language Acquisition Office also works collaboratively with the Literacy Department to support Literacy for second language learners. Specific services include the following:

• Bilingual Spanish/English program at the elementary level: Students use their native language to maximize learning English and also receive up to 45 minutes per day of direct ESL instruction to support learning English
• ESL Itinerant Pull-Out Program Grades K-5: Students receive up to 45 minutes per day of direct ESL instruction to support the learning of English
• ESL Building-Based Programs Grades 6-12: Students receive 30-90 minutes of instructional programming per day on English language acquisition
• Newcomer Program: For non-English speaking students who are new to the United States, Heritage Middle School provides one year of intensive programming
